GER 101: Elementary German I

Our aim is to make Germany's cultural heritage accessible digitally, free of charge and at any time. We network the digital offerings of German museums, archives and libraries and other cultural heritage institutions so that you can search and use the digital cultural heritage in our database. All object pages also indicate how you may use an object or whether this is not permitted.

The German National Library is Germany's central archival library.

The Onleihe is Goethe-Institut’s digital library (eLibrary). More than 20,000 German language eBooks, audio books, movies, materials for German language learners, magazines and newspapers are available for downloading from the Onleihe. ​​​​​​​

The Austrian Studies Association (formerly the Modern Austrian Literature and Culture Association, MALCA) continues traditions started in 1961, as the only North American association devoted to scholarship on all aspects Austrian, Austro-Hungarian, and Habsburg territory cultural life and history from the eighteenth century until today.

The German-American Society was established on July 12, 1962, incorporated under the laws of New Jersey by the merger of Liederkranz Inc. (founded 1881) and Aurora Inc (founded 1905). The German-American Society of Trenton origin is a traditional, family-oriented society. Our mission is to cultivate and strengthen our German-American cultural heritage and traditions, strengthen our family bonds and provide an entertaining and rewarding social and educational atmosphere for our members and guests. We also support the cultural and social needs of our members in a variety of activities and events involving sport, family, educational and social orientation. We strive to foster a feeling of Gemütlichkeit (Friendliness) among our members and community.

Since its founding in 1764, The German Society of Pennsylvania has served Philadelphia's German community. Between the 1680s and the American Revolution, the majority of an estimated 100,000 German-speaking immigrants coming to North America settled in Pennsylvania, making up a third of Philadelphia's population by the 1760s. These immigrants often arrived in a miserable state after long sea voyages known for unhealthy conditions. In response to their plight, on December 26, 1764, sixty-five prominent German colonists established an organization "for the relief of distressed Germans." Over the course of its 250-year history, the Society has evolved with the changing needs of the German-American population of Philadelphia. During the 1800s, the Society continued its support for immigrants in need while also increasingly sponsoring activities to preserve and promote German traditions and customs. Today, the Society's membership and programs are open to anyone with an interest in the German language and culture.

The Germantown Historical Society is an educational and research center dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of the original German Township in northwest Philadelphia. Encompassing the contemporary neighborhoods of Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill, greater Germantown is a dynamic and diverse community. The Society houses a unique collection of artifacts, books, manuscripts, maps, and images documenting Germantown’s many stories. Community residents, historians, scholars, anyone interested in experience this history by visiting our museum exhibition and exploring the resources in the Pat Henning Library and Archives.

Founded in 1891, the Pennsylvania German Society is a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the study of the Pennsylvania German people and their 325+ year history in America. For anyone interested in helping to preserve, advance, and disseminate knowledge of the culture of the Pennsylvania Germans, often known as "The Pennsylvania Dutch," no investment can pay better dividends than membership in The Pennsylvania German Society.
