About This Guide

This guide supports the ENG 247 course which explores the African American literary tradition from The Harlem Renaissance and the New Negro (1920-1930), The Protest Era and A Call for Civil Rights (1930-1950), The Black Arts Movement/Black Aesthetic (1960-1980) & A New Black Aesthetic and A New Millennium (1990 to Present Day). This guide lists resources to learn more about the African American experience through all references of art, music, history, and writing. Important figures and collaborators during this time period are noted, but not exhaustive. This guide provides a general guideline of the periods and where to learn more about them.
