SOC 101: Introduction to Sociology

The Marxists Internet Archive (MIA, http://www.marxists.org/) is an all-volunteer, non-profit public library established in its present form in 1998 (see also the MIA history page for the archive's earlier history). In 2022, MIA averaged 3.3 million visitors per month, downloading 27.5 million files per month. This represents a 79% increase in visitors since 2013.

It has been over ten years since the first World Happiness Report was published. And it is exactly ten years since the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/281, proclaiming 20 March to be observed annually as International Day of Happiness. Since then, more and more people have come to believe that our success as countries should be judged by the happiness of our people. There is also a growing consensus about how satisfaction should be measured. This consensus means that national happiness can now become an operational objective for governments.

The American Society of Criminology is an international organization whose members pursue scholarly, scientific, and professional knowledge concerning the measurement, etiology, consequences, prevention, control, and treatment of crime and delinquency.

The American Sociological Association, founded in 1905, is the national professional membership association for sociologists and others interested in sociology. ASA members include students, faculty working in various institutions, and people working in government agencies and nonprofit and private sector organizations.

Applied sociology translates foundational sociology to non-academic audiences. Clinical sociology incorporates translational design, implementation, and evaluation interventions to improve outcomes and solve challenges.

The International Sociological Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to scientific purposes in sociology and social sciences. It is an international sociological body gathering both individuals and national sociological organizations.

The SSSP's stated purpose is to promote and protect sociological research from teaching about significant problems of social life and, particularly, to encourage the work of young sociologists, to stimulate the application of the scientific method and theory to the study of vital social problems; to promote problem-centered social research; to foster cooperative relations among persons and organizations engaged in the application of scientific sociological findings to the formulation of social policies; to foster a higher quality of life, social welfare, and positive social relations in society and the global community and to undertake any activity related to it or necessary or desirable for the accomplishment of the preceding purposes. Fulfilling this purpose requires both strict adherence to the highest principles of academic freedom, freedom of speech, and due process, as stated in the AAUP's 1940 statement on academic freedom and tenure and 2014 statement on academic freedom and electronic communications, and the protection of the right to engage in intellectual debates of all types without fear of censorship or retaliation.
