An Interview with Kathy Cilia, Executive Director of American Medical Technologists about the importance of Professional Organizations for health care professionals and how standards are set and constantly updated for health care professionals.

Below are several class discussion questions that educators may want to assign to students in conjunction with the provided interview.

1. In times of shortage, should professional organizations adjust their Eligibility Requirements to either encourage more professionals to join the field (or conversely in times of glut in a particular field) to limit the number of professionals entering the field? Explain

2. Is a Job Task Analysis the best way to update the standards of a given profession?  What might be a better alternative?

3. Should all states turn over their licensing responsibilities to professional organizations?  List some pros and cons. 

 

  1. Tell me about yourself and your background.
  2. Tell me about the AMT, the credentials it awards, and its mission.
  3. How does the AMT set its standards for each credential it awards?  How often are these standards updated?
  4. How does the AMT interact with Local, State, and Federal lawmakers? What about other professional organizations? employers? educators?
  5. How do you think credentialing might change in the future as health care continues to evolve?
