ENG 101: Using Keywords to Explore a Topic

Using the Discovery box to search for background information

The Discovery box, the big search box at the top of the library website, allows searching of the library's materials. The Discovery box offers great flexibility as it allow you to "limit"  your search in many ways.

If your initial search in the Discovery box is a simple, one or two word topic, it will often result in a "Research Starter" article. This is an article from an encyclopedia, a authoritative type of resource that provides broad, background information. For example, if you use the search term "gangs" in the Discovery box, the first article in the list of results list will be a Research Starter article, an article from an encyclopedia.
