About This Guide

This guide supports the ENG 246 course which explores the development of the African American literary tradition from African Retentions (1400-1600), Enslavement and the Quest for Freedom (1600-1865), Reconstruction and Repression (1865-1910). This guide lists resources to learn more about the African American experience through all references of art, music, history, and writing. Important figures and collaborators during this time period are noted, but not exhaustive. This guide provides a general guideline of the periods and where to learn more about them.
