Each year, the American Historical Association awards several research grants with the aim of advancing the study and exploration of history in a diverse number of subject areas. All grants are awarded in June and may be used anytime in the subsequent 15 months for expenses related to furthering research in progress. Grants may be used for travel to a library or archive; microfilming, photography, or photocopying; borrowing or access fees; and similar research expenses—a list of purposes that is meant to be merely illustrative, not exhaustive (other expenses, such as child care, can be included). The deadline for research grant applications is February 15. ***Eligibility: Only AHA members are eligible to apply for AHA research grants. Preference will be given to advanced doctoral students, nontenured faculty, and unaffiliated scholars and to those with specific research needs such as the completion of a project or discrete segment thereof. Please note: Within a five-year period, no individual is eligible to receive more than a combined total of $1,500 from all AHA research grants.***

Thanks to generous funding from GlaxoSmithKline, the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture offers annual travel grants of up to $1,500 for researchers whose work would benefit from access to African, African American, and African Diaspora collections held at the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library.

Fellowships and Education at the Schomburg.

The Lillian Gary Taylor Fellowship in American Literature supports research in the literary works of authors resident in what is now the United States. The William A. Elwood Fellowship in Civil Rights and African-American Studies supports research in the history of African-Americans, in particular their struggle for equal rights.

The African American Intellectual History Society (AAIHS) is a scholarly organization that aims to foster dialogue about researching, writing, and teaching black thought and culture. AAIHS originally began as a blog founded by Christopher Cameron in early 2014. Cameron founded the AAIHS blog to “provide a space for scholars in disparate fields to discuss the many aspects of teaching and researching Black intellectual history.”

The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc. (AAHGS) strives to preserve African-ancestored family history, genealogy, and cultural diversity by teaching research techniques and disseminating information throughout the community. Our primary goals are to promote scholarly research, provide resources for historical and genealogical studies, create a network of persons with similar interests, and assist members in documenting their histories.

The mission of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH®) is to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community.

Carbica, the Caribbean Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives is part of a bigger network, the International Council on Archives (ICA) which works closely with UNESCO. ICA has more than 1700 members in over 180 countries, which makes it truly international.

Founded in 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the largest civil rights organization in the United States. "The principal objective of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens of the United States".

NCNW was begun by Mary McLeod Bethune to unite women to secure justice. It is now a multi-faceted organization that works at local, state, national and international levels.
